The return on intellectual property enforcement is difficult to express as a single revenue figure. Some benefits prevent consumer harm, preserve exclusivity, protect distribution, or improve intelligence rather than producing an immediately attributable sale.
Establish the exposure baseline
Measure validated incidents, audience, sales signals, priority assets, customer complaints, and market coverage before interpreting removal activity.
Account for operating cost
Include monitoring, review, evidence collection, platform submission, legal escalation, technology, and management time. Automation should reduce total effort per meaningful outcome, not simply increase alerts.
Measure durability
Track relisting, repeat actors, time to reappearance, account-level action, and unresolved high-impact exposure. A quick removal followed by immediate relisting has limited value.
Connect to business indicators
Relevant signals may include counterfeit complaints, support burden, channel confidence, conversion, price erosion, security incidents, and partner feedback.
ROI analysis should be transparent about assumptions. Its purpose is to improve priorities and investment decisions, not to claim certainty where causal evidence is limited.
